“Putin won't give up his imperialist ambitions” (Blinken)
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has said that a potential agreement to end the war between Ukraine and Russia must include a deterrent mechanism to prevent Moscow from launching another attack in the future.
Speaking at a press conference in Paris alongside the French foreign minister, Blinken said this mechanism could take various forms, including a “demarcation or ceasefire line” that would be monitored by other countries.
“The next administration will have to decide, if that happens, what the role of the United States might be,” he said, referring to the arrival at the White House of Donald Trump, who for his part has insisted on a swift end to the conflict.
For the man who is still head of US diplomacy, the Trump administration will want to get “the best deal possible”, which he believes means a pact that incorporates a real deterrent against Russia to prevent it from repeating aggression in the future.
Blinken is convinced that President Vladimir Putin “has not and will not give up his imperialist ambitions” and, in the event of a ceasefire, will want to use the period of suspended fighting to regroup, re-equip and “possibly strike again”.
