“Russia threatens to lose key military bases in Syria”
A well-informed Moscow source reports to the U.S. Bloomberg news agency that Russia is on the verge of losing two key military bases in Syria.
These two military bases in Syria have long allowed Russia to exert influence in the Middle East and Africa. But since the fall of pro-Russian dictator Bashar al-Assad, the new Syrian government wants to do away with Russian interference and presence, and negotiations over the military bases are said to have stalled.
At issue are a Russian air base in Khmeimim and a naval base in Tartous, both in western Syria, on the Mediterranean Sea. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Tuesday ahead of new talks. The Russians want to convince the new Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) to allow the bases to remain as yet.
