Los Angeles: Wildfires could be costliest catastrophe in US history
As wildfires continue to devastate Los Angeles, government agencies have yet to estimate the material losses caused by the flames.
However, AccuWeather, a company specializing in weather data and its global impact, estimates current losses to range between 250 billion dollars and 275 billion dollars.
This figure far exceeds the cost of damages from California's most destructive wildfire, the 2018 Camp Fire (30 billion dollars), or the 2023 Maui wildfires (5.7 billion dollars).
It also surpasses the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, which ravaged six southern states last fall, with estimated losses of 225 billion dollars to 250 billion dollars.
The situation remains critical, as local authorities fear that strong winds could further intensify the fires.
