Unidentified object in California sky: 140 years later, the mystery remains unresolved
November 6, 1886. As the sky over Sacramento (California's capital) fills with starry diamonds on a calm, restful night...a shape suddenly stands out. The locals couldn't believe it, what stood out there before their eyes (6 years before the airplane was invented) was a UFO!
Curious onlookers crowd the city streets, some locked in their silence, others shouting to the sky that the end of the world is near. It looks like an aircraft with aluminum contours, flying over the city, equipped with a gigantic spotlight that shines on the surrounding rooftops, says the Belgian media RTBF.
A UFO? Really? This resolutely modern word wasn't known to anyone at the time. Those who witnessed the scene spoke of a flying vessel, or airship. Hundreds of people in Sacramento, Oakland and San Francisco witnessed the strange object twinkling the sky. On November 22 of the same year, reports of a kind of cigar with a headlight were heard in the dark sky, confirming the idea that there were several types of aircraft.
Police stations were abuzz with questions, and citizens cried out their concerns. Why this sudden aerial invasion? The phenomenon was to be repeated several times, at a time when mechanization was not yet an issue in the United States.
German espionage, just a few years before World War I? Witnessing Venus or the Moon a little too closely? To this day, the mystery remains...
