Team Netherlands brings convicted child rapist to Olympics
News coverage of the Dutch Olympic team has been overshadowed worldwide by the selection of a convicted child rapist.
Indeed, the Netherlands has decided to take Dutch beach volleyball player Steven van de Velde to the Paris Olympics.
The Dutch beach volleyball player had sex with a 12-year-old girl in England at the age of 19. This is punishable under British law anyway, whether the girl consented or not, and the Dutchman was convicted of it in 2016. He first served 12 months in a British cell, after which he was transferred to the Netherlands, where he remained behind bars for another month before being released early.
The selection of Steven van de Velde is therefore provoking fierce reactions worldwide.
