150,000 Russian troops deployed in Donbass to breach Ukrainian defenses
According to the Ukrainian military spokesman for the eastern front, Nazar Volochyn, almost 150,000 Russian troops have been sent to eastern Ukraine, including Pokrovsk, Kurakhove and Vremivka, to break through the Ukrainian defense.
In a televised interview, Nazar Volochyn said that the Russian armed forces were trying to “occupy the heights and take control of the roads and logistical routes leading to Kurakhove in order to break through the city's defense. The Russian army is intensively bombing the town using guided aerial bombs and artillery”. According to the military spokesman, the town is controlled by the Ukrainians, and any Russian reconnaissance units that enter are quickly eliminated, reports Le Monde.
The aim of these troops is to break through the Ukrainian defences. To do so, they suffered heavy losses. In the first week of December, the Russians are said to have lost 8,000 men, compared with over 35,000 in November.
