For Estonia “NATO will have to contain Russia for at least 10 years”
The North Atlantic Alliance will have to continue to contain Russia for another 10 to 20 years to prevent Moscow from deciding to attack NATO, Estonian intelligence chief, Kaupo Rosin, told Reuters.
“NATO's task over the next 10 to 20 years will be to contain or deter Russia so that it doesn't get the stupid idea of moving militarily closer to the West,” Rosin said.
Such a task was achievable, he said, but had to be taken seriously in the West. Investment in the defense sector is needed.
“National and NATO military plans must be credible, real and backed by real resources, in terms of troops present, follow-on units, ammunition. If we do our homework properly, we'll be able to deter Russia,” said the Estonian intelligence chief.
According to Rosin, he finds it hard to imagine that Russia will be holding peace talks with Ukraine in the near future. At the same time, Moscow will try to “limit NATO activities, NATO infrastructure and the presence of troops in the vicinity of Russia”.
