Germany halts 47,000 asylum applications from Syrians

Following the fall of Syrian dictator Assad, several European countries are halting asylum applications from that country. 47,000 applications are halted in Germany.

Since Syria's civil war began in 2011, some 14 million out of 22 million Syrians have fled. Half of those 14 million have remained in their country, while the other half have spread to some 130 countries worldwide. Most of them are in Syria's neighbouring countries, with some 3.3 million in Turkey alone. In total, the European Union already gave some € 10 billion to Turkey for hosting Syrians.

Now that the Assad regime has fallen, many countries are deciding to stop asylum procedures for Syrians. The largest group of Syrians coming to the European Union ended up in Germany. On Monday, 47,000 pending asylum procedures of Syrians were halted in Germany. The same happened in Austria. For the European Commission, the conditions ‘for a safe and dignified return’ are not yet in place.
