‘Killing machine’: Several mass graves discovered in Syria

Several mass graves have been uncovered near the city of Al-Qutayfah in Syria, where tens of thousands of people are believed to be buried.

Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime two weeks ago, residents, forensic teams, and international organizations have begun working in the area to exhume the bodies.

Earlier this week, Stephen Rapp, an international prosecutor for war crimes, visited one of the first mass grave sites discovered in Najha, about 10 kilometers south of Damascus.

Evidence collected there indicates that the Assad regime systematically persecuted the Syrian people, particularly during the early years of the civil war, from 2011 to 2012. Stephen Rapp also estimates that more than 100,000 people have been tortured by Assad’s regime since 2013.

Stephen Rapp said that the Syrian government had established a system of "organized killing" and that numerous individuals participated in this "killing machine."

Satellite images revealed that excavations began at the Al-Qutayfah site between 2012 and 2014 but ceased in 2022. To date, more than 150,000 Syrians remain missing after being imprisoned.
