Saydnaya, Bashar al-Assad regime's prison of horror

The prison in question, located some thirty kilometers north of Damascus, was run by the Syrian military police and was known for the torture it inflicted on prisoners.

On Monday, the Syrian civil defense force, the “White Helmets”, arrived in the area to search for prisoners that are alive and free them as soon as possible.

15 bodies were discovered in the Saydnaya “slaughterhouse”, the prison used by Assad's regime. These civilians were reportedly savagely tortured.

Conditions inside Saydnaya prison were described as extremely inhuman and brutal. Prisoners faced systematic torture, extrajudicial executions and deplorable living conditions.

Cells were overcrowded and poorly ventilated, and prisoners received very little food and virtually no medical care.

According to Amnesty International, up to 20,000 prisoners may have passed through this prison.
