Trump calls for immediate ceasefire in Ukraine

The meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has impressed Donald Trump. The US president, who moves back to the White House in January, called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine the day after his meeting with the Ukrainian president at French President Emmanuel Macron's Élysée in Paris. Trump claimed that Kiev wants ‘a deal’ to end the war with Russia.

Trump stressed in a post on his own Truth Social platform that both Russia and Ukraine had already suffered huge losses in the war. ‘There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin,’ the US president-elect said. ‘Too many lives are being needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed.’ According to Trump, Kiev had ‘ridiculously’ lost 400,000 soldiers and many more civilians. ‘Zelensky and Ukraine want to make a deal and stop the madness,’ it read on Sunday.
