Volodymyr Zelenskyy open to deployment of Western troops in Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed openness to the potential deployment of Western troops to Ukraine to ensure the country's security as the conflict with Russia approaches its third year.

The Ukrainian president, who met with Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron last weekend during the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, endorsed the idea but emphasized that Ukraine’s future membership in NATO remains a priority.

"A troop contingent from one country or another could be present in Ukraine for as long as it isn’t part of NATO. But for that we need to have a clear understanding of when Ukraine becomes an EU member and when a NATO member," he said speaking alongside German opposition leader Friedrich Merz in Kyiv.

However, Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned that an invitation to join NATO alone would not guarantee long-term protection against Russia.

Meanwhile, Friedrich Merz criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for refusing to supply Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles. These weapons, Friedrich Merz argued, could be used to target critical infrastructure like the Kerch Bridge, which connects Crimea to mainland Russia.

"We want your army to be capable of hitting military bases in Russia. Not the civilian population, not infrastructure, but the military targets from which your country is being attacked," the German politician told the Ukrainian leader.
