Uproar at Mattel: Barbie ends up on an adult website
With the release of the musical “Wicked” imminent in the US, an incident may well disrupt the event...
Mattel has just launched a limited edition of figurines featuring the film's characters, played by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, among others. The limited edition is a special collection that was supposed to stand out during the festive season and get noticed under the tree, in slippers, on snow-covered tables... It wanted to get noticed, and it got noticed, but not in the right way. A huge mistake is currently giving Mattel's communications team a hard time.
On X (formerly Twitter), a user recounts her discovery: as she admires her new Glinda doll, she notices an annoying typo on the back of the packaging. “Mattel's official “Wicked” dolls link to a por.n site on the box,” she explains. The Internet user in question observed that above the barcode, the site www.wicked.com was mentioned, reports 20 Minutes. And the URL linked to an adult site.
In reality, the company wanted to direct consumers to www.WickedMovie.com, hence the (very embarrassing) confusion. In a press release, Mattel stresses that the incident was indeed reported internally. “We deeply regret this regrettable error and are taking immediate steps to rectify it,” the company guaranteed.
