Putin gives asylum to fugitive Syrian dictator Assad

Rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has captured the Syrian capital Damascus and overthrown Assad's regime. The Syrian president has fled. The leader of the rebel group that has taken power in Syria is Abu Mohammad al-Golani.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad reportedly fled by plane and arrived in Moscow on Sunday evening. This was reported by Russian news agencies based on sources inside the Kremlin. Assad and his family are said to have applied for asylum there. They would have been granted this for ‘humanitarian reasons,’ according to state news agency Ria Novosti.

Meanwhile, the United States announced on Sunday that it has targeted more than 75 targets in Syria. This was reported by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in an announcement. By doing so, the United States wants to prevent terror group IS from trying to seize power in Syria now that President Assad's regime has been ousted.

On Monday, the United Nations Security Council is already meeting for an emergency meeting behind closed doors on Syria. The meeting is scheduled for 3 pm on Monday and was requested by Russia on Sunday.
