Afghan women no longer welcome in hospitals
The Taliban's supreme leader has banned women from taking nursing and midwifery courses. And that is tragic news for women in Afghan society as those courses were more or less the only option left for young girls after primary school. Indeed, the Taliban do not want women to be trained and educated.
Human Rights Watch says the ban was issued by Taliban leader Haibatullah Akhundzada and passed to the Ministry of Health on Monday, and communicated to private medical training institutions shortly after.
Although the ban has not yet been formally declared, two government officials who spoke to NPR on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter have already confirmed that it is true. In addition, several nursing and midwifery students told NPR that they were not allowed to attend classes this week.
