End-of-year festivities: Hell for our cats and dogs
It's a time for celebration and wonder, for big smiles and thousands of lights on in the cities... Fireworks are out, much to the annoyance of our pets.
It's almost become a tradition for some of us to bring firecrackers and fireworks out on New Year's Eve, in order to mark the occasion and bring the previous year to a noisy and beautiful close. It's a festive and enchanting occasion, but one that doesn't please everyone in the household... In fact, it's our dear four-legged companions, mainly cats and dogs, who suffer. With the noise of the explosion, animals develop anxious behaviours, and tend to flee and wander off.
Useful little refuges
To ensure that this transition from one year to the next doesn't turn into a nightmare, it's a good idea to set up comfortable, secure areas inside your home. They'll come in handy when firecrackers and fireworks are in full swing.
If you find a stray animal at night, be sure to visit the vet and have its identification checked.
And if you realize that your little companion has suddenly disappeared, contact your local pound as soon as you can. If it's identified, it'll be easier to find it.
