Charity event for childhood cancer ends in deadly tragedy
50-year-old Italian Michele Raule had set himself a sporting challenge to benefit the fight against childhood cancer. He wanted to cycle from the sea to the summit of Mont Blanc, hike and walk without sleeping, "using only my legs", he said. But on the flanks of France's highest mountain, disaster struck.
Michele set off from Genoa by bike at 5am, then swapped his bike for his hiking boots from Val Veny to continue on foot to the summit of Mont Blanc. The Italian made it to the summit, but things went horribly wrong during the descent.
Michele slipped and fell down some 100 metres. He eventually landed in a glacial crevasse. Only after several days were rescuers able to recover the lifeless body of the brave Italian.
