He puts on weight to dodge military service
A South Korean man has received a one-year suspended prison sentence after deliberately gaining weight to evade mandatory military service, a Seoul court told AFP.
In South Korea, all men under the age of 30 are required to serve at least two years in the military, as the country remains technically at war with North Korea.
However, individuals with certain health conditions can be exempt from physical duties and assigned to administrative tasks instead.
A 26-year-old man was found guilty of overeating intentionally to avoid military service.
Upon learning that a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher exempted men from physical activities, the man decided to drastically increase his food intake to gain as much weight as possible.
In 2017, he weighed just 83 kg, but by 2022, his weight had risen to 105 kg, and he maintained 102 kg the following year, according to the Seoul Eastern District Court.
