Towards a new Japanese automotive giant with a major merger?
The rumour had been circulating since late November. It has now been confirmed: the discussions opened between Nissan and Honda are aimed at a possible merger between the two automakers. To become number 3 in the world?
Nissan, emancipated from Renault in its Alliance, is in difficulty. But Nissan has a definite expertise in electric cars. Honda is struggling to establish itself in Europe. But Honda's expertise in powertrains makes it a sure bet in the automotive world. In the summer of 2024, the heads of these two brands began talking about a strategic rapprochement. With winter approaching, an official press release clearly mentions the objective of creating a holding company between these two automotive giants. Mitsubishi, an Alliance member under Nissan's control, is also joining the talks. If these automakers can agree on closer collaboration, or even a merger, they will form the world's 3rd largest automotive group.
And Renault
This news is also good news for Renault. The French brand could sell its Nissan shares to Honda and make a good deal, without necessarily calling into question the industrial collaboration with Nissan and Mitsubishi... Even if the Alliance could be profoundly called into question in the event of a merger. However, there are still some reservations, as nothing has yet been decided. Although it's clear that whatever route is taken, Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi will be associated in one way or another. The aim is to better face up to the electric car race and the new global automotive challenges.
