Can you spot AI music? This platform says it can
It seems like everyone is talking about AI-generated music. But can we tell the difference when we hear it? The question is important, as a huge proportion of the revenue generated by streaming platforms is currently being diverted to machine-produced music away from actual composers and songwriters.
The French platform Deezer says it has a solution. It has launched an AI music detection tool that identifies approximately 10,000 fully AI-generated tracks delivered to its platform – every single day. This staggering figure accounts for about 10% of Deezer's daily content delivery.
According to a study conducted by CISAC and PMP Strategy, nearly 25% of creators’ revenues are at risk by 2028, which could amount to as much as €4 billion by that time. “This represents a colossal, even critical, challenge for the music creation sector as a whole,” according to Deezer.
Detecting AI-generated music
Deezer claims its new technology will outperform existing tools by accurately detecting AI-generated content. The company says the goal is to protect the rights and revenues of artists and songwriters. It plans to implement a tagging system for AI-generated content, ensuring it is excluded from algorithmic and editorial recommendations.
The AI detection tool can recognize music created by various generative models, including Suno, Udio, and similar tools. In October 2024, the company was the first streaming platform to sign a global statement against the unlicensed use of creative works for AI training.
