Tired of your tattoo? Getting it removed is possible, but it's painful!
We all know people with tattoos. One got the tattoo as a reminder of a sacred love story, a memorable holiday... the other as a life motto. But what if years later, you want to get rid of that tattoo?
Well, it has become a striking trend: more and more people choose to have tattoos removed. But the problem is that people think that this can be done quickly, merely by popping into the tattoo shop.
Coralie D’hont, laser therapist at Skincenters in Antwerp, tells Story: “We always start with an intake interview where we look at the tattoo and discuss the customer’s expectations. Every tattoo can be removed, but sometimes not 100 percent. It depends on the customer’s skin, the ink used or how the tattoo was placed. On average, we calculate three to six treatments for complete removal. We calculate six to eight weeks between treatments because the skin needs enough time to recover. So if you only need three treatments, you're already going to be at it for half a year. Even after removal, the process isn't over yet, because aftercare also requires a lot of attention.”
Ian Thomas is one of those people who had a tattoo removed: “It really hurts. They use a laser to shoot at the ink at a very high speed and at a high temperature. Yes, removing a tattoo hurts a lot more than getting one. It's a kind of burn on your body and you have to take good care of it.”
