Natural disasters in 2024: 320 billion dollars in damage, 11,000 fatalities

The natural disasters that occurred in 2024 caused total damage worth 320 billion dollars, German reinsurer Munich Re calculated.

Hurricanes in the United States, storms in the US and central Europe, floods in China, Germany, Spain, typhoons in Asia ... 2024 was another year in which natural disasters around the world caused many deaths and extensive damage.

For insurers, it meant a particularly expensive year: worldwide, damage amounted to $320 billion (€310.5 billion), German reinsurer Munich Re calculated.

Tobias Grimm, chief climate scientist at Munich Re, said the cause was clearly climate warming: it causes more frequent and extreme weather disasters.

Not only was the material damage greater than ever, the human toll was also particularly heavy: a total of about 11,000 people lost their lives in the various natural disasters around the world.
