On the road to uncovering Škoda Octavia's secret

The Škoda Octavia has been revamped with a typical mid-generation facelift. To remind us of the cargo mode, this test of the Combi estate in the centre of Belgium attempts to confirm its good reputation.

There is one brand that has managed to build a reassuring image for itself, and that is Škoda. These “almost” Volkswagens from the Czech Republic have a reputation for being practical cars that are suited for family life. The manufacturer also tries to attract crowds by being omnipresent at cycle races. And indeed, the boot of the Octavia Combi is of the generous kind. You can easily put a bicycle in it. In any case, it's difficult to find a more efficient model than this to set off once loaded like a mule. Imagine: 640 litres with the rear seats free. That’s 1700 liters behind the tailgate when you fold it all down! In addition, Škoda has not forgotten its best recipes: hooks for bags, partition bars, scraper behind the fuel filler flap, storage for an umbrella in the door, etc.

Retouches

This loading capacity is not new for the Octavia. The retouches on the Czech mainly concern the light signature and some styling details on the exterior. On board, the central screen is larger for infotainment, comfort control and driving aids. We also note the arrival of new materials. Under the hood, the petrol solutions are evolving, the 3-cylinder 1.0 has been replaced by a 4-cylinder 1.5. I was able to test this TSI in its “mild-hybrid” mHEV eTec 150 hp variant in Belgium. This engine, with a little electric boost, is associated with the 7-speed DSG robotized gearbox. An engine clearly tuned for sobriety and efficiency without boasting. Here, the important thing is to move easily, as far as possible, on a full tank. Indeed, with 45 liters of unleaded in the tank, you can count on a little less than 800km of autonomy. That is, 5.7 l/100km without being too wise with the right foot.

Practical

This 4.69m long estate is pleasant to drive, despite a slight tendency to roll. It can therefore lack dynamism, but only for the most demanding drivers. Of course, the no-frills decor is not the most jovial. Even if the lighting ambiance offers several atmospheres, especially during night rides. What counts here, and to remain faithful to this Czech spirit, is pragmatism without being a killjoy. A car with a pleasantly versatile look, versatile, not too bulky and with a transport capacity well above average. Here is its secret: everything the people ask for? In any case, you have to pay a good €43,000 or CHF 45,000 minimum, and sometimes well over €50,000 depending on the finishes and options, to enjoy it with this engine.
