Joe Biden: The last straw for Donald Trump?
A final provocation? The Biden administration has decided to extend the temporary protected status of almost a million migrants.
The decision, taken by the local Department of Homeland Security (DHS), concerns a total of 600,000 Venezuelans, 232,000 Salvadorans, 1,900 Sudanese and 103,700 Ukrainians.
With just a few days to go before the end of his mandate, Joe Biden is determined to preside over the country until the end. As reported by 20 Minutes, he's just declared that nearly a million foreign nationals will be allowed to stay legally in the United States for a further 18 months.
TPS, or “Temporary Protected Status”, is a program granted to foreign nationals from countries where security has been compromised by natural disasters, armed conflict or “extraordinary” circumstances. The aim is to protect all those who need it from returning home in dangerous conditions.
The announcement comes shortly before the inauguration of Donald Trump, who has promised a tougher immigration policy, including the deportation of migrants. Already in his first term, from 2017 to 2021, the president-elect had attempted to end the TPS program, an attempt that ended in failure.
With this extension, the Biden administration hopes to respond to certain humanitarian emergencies, while ensuring (relative) stability for thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people staying in the country.
