Measures to curb the Kremlin's war machine
US and UK announce additional sanctions against Russia's oil and liquefied gas sector.
Senior US officials believe these are the most significant sanctions imposed on the Russian energy sector since the start of the war in Ukraine. The measures are aimed at reducing revenues that finance “the Kremlin's war machine” and could cost the Russian economy billions of dollars a month, a US official told a press conference.
Although Joe Biden's administration adopted these sanctions, they could be revoked by Donald Trump when he takes office on January 20. Specifically, the US, in coordination with the UK, has sanctioned two of Russia's largest oil producers and exporters.
According to the British government, toegther these companies produce more than a million barrels a day, worth around $23 billion a year at current prices.
