Russian journalist jailed for eight years after wrong info on war in Ukraine
Sergueï Mikhaïlov, a 48-year-old Russian journalist from Gorno-Altaik, in the autonomous republic of Altaj, in southern Russia, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for criticising the Russian military and the invasion of Ukraine in his articles published in March and April 2022.
He was accused of spreading false information and discrediting the armed forces, a crime that has been severely prosecuted in Russia since the beginning of the conflict.
According to the prosecutor's office, the journalist, who worked for a local news site, wrote the articles ‘out of political hatred’. He must now serve his sentence in a penal colony.
Repression against critical voices has increased, affecting not only journalists but also ordinary citizens and political opponents.
