Russian spy ship spotted off the French coast: United Kingdom sends warning

This Wednesday, January 22, the British Ministry of Defense declared that the “Russian spy ship” Yantar had been monitored and tracked in the English Channel by the Royal Navy.

A few weeks ago, the Yantar had already been spotted above undersea cables. According to the British authorities, it's now in the North Sea, close to the French coast.

Defense Minister John Healey explained that the Russian spy ship was “used to gather intelligence and map the UK's critical undersea infrastructure”. He added that “for the past two days, the Royal Navy has been monitoring the vessel at all times in our waters”. He also said that the Royal Navy had received new orders allowing British warships to approach the Russian vessel more easily, reports the UK Defence Journal.

“I have authorized the Royal Navy submarine to surface near Yantar, strictly as a deterrent measure, to make it clear that we are secretly monitoring her every move,” concluded John Healey.
