NASA finds evidence of ancient lake on Mars
NASA has found signs of a lake on Mars, with evidence suggesting the presence of water rather than just ice.
Researchers discovered ripples in the sandy shores of ancient lakebeds on Mars, which were likely created by the movement of water pushed by wind. These wave-like patterns are a strong indication that the planet once had open bodies of water.
"The shape of the ripples could only have been formed under water that was open to the atmosphere and acted upon by wind," said Claire Mondro, a postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology and the lead author of a study published in Science Advances.
The presence of these ripples suggests a significant amount of water. Scientists believe they formed approximately 3.7 billion years ago when Mars was warm enough to sustain liquid water.
Experts further suggest that the existence of liquid water on the planet could have made it possible for life to exist.
