US elections: Science flouted if Trump returns?
Beyond the impact of the outcome of the US presidential election on the country's domestic politics, the identity of the future president will have a resounding impact on global environmental and health policy.
The skepticism shown by Republicans towards climate change is no secret. Donald Trump has even called it a "hoax". But this contempt for the environmental cause doesn't stop there. The highly controversial Project 2025 provides, among other things, for the dismantling of the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
On the other hand, the Republicans are also promising to put an end to the Inflation Reduction Act, a green technology investment plan that President Biden launched during his term. A plan that had been described as "the largest measure ever taken by Congress to fight climate change".
From a health perspective, although Trump and Harris have opposing approaches to issues such as abortion rights, they agree that a solution must be found to the problem of the high cost of medication in the United States. Let us recall that in the meantime, the country has seen its life expectancy decline and that the crisis of confidence in doctors and scientists is only growing. A crisis of confidence that has already caused significant damage and whose impact has been felt beyond American borders.
Confidence in science and its lessons will undoubtedly be one of the major "hidden" issues of the November 5 election...
