Weather phenomenon DANA turns Spain into swirling river: multiple deaths

Warnings are being declared across Spain for extreme rain, lightning and hail through Thursday. The southeast in particular is currently experiencing severe flooding following heavy rainfall. The cause? Weather phenomenon DANA: Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos.

Isolated high depressions (DANA) are common and particularly dangerous atmospheric phenomena in summer and fall. They occur when a low-pressure system detaches from the currents around the earth and starts flowing independently.

Code Red
During the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, emergency services found several bodies in eastern Spain. It is currently unclear how many people succumbed.
The exact location and number of fatalities were not specified as families had not yet been informed. “Bodies have been found, but out of respect for the families we are not going to provide further details,” said Carlos Mazon, president of the Valencia region's

Crisis Committee
The Valencia region and parts of the province of Malaga are currently even under code red. The island of Mallorca has also been affected by the extreme weather. Authorities in the hardest-hit areas advised citizens to stay home and avoid all non-essential travel.

How many deaths?
Meanwhile, many videos reached us via social media showing the dire situation in eastern and southeastern Spain. Dozens of videos on social media show people trapped in flood waters. Some of them are clinging to trees to avoid being swept away.

The Spanish government has set up a crisis committee to deal with the situation as best it can. The first vice president, María Jesús Montero, will lead this committee.
