“The situation is serious": Trump is serious, he'll do anything to buy back Greenland
To force this huge island to become American, the new president-elect is prepared to do anything, including imposing colossal tariffs.
The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, after a 45-minute telephone conversation with Donald Trump, gave the press an update on the situation. On Thursday, January 16, she announced that the Republican billionaire had no intention of withdrawing his threat of punitive tariffs on Danish products to force Greenland to become American.
In 2019, Donald Trump had already proposed buying this vast (autonomous) Danish territory. With its strategic location and untapped mineral and oil reserves, Greenland is a coveted destination.
Mette Frederiksen also pointed out that the American president-elect had, during the conversation, “hinted that, unfortunately, a situation could arise in which we would work less together than we do today, in the economic sphere. This isn't at all something we would recommend to anyone”. “The situation is serious,” she added. “We don't want to have any conflict with the Americans in the commercial field”.
And the Prime Minister asserted that this meeting with Trump, who maintains that Greenland is indispensable to the economic security of the United States, had in no way allowed her to “devalue the seriousness” of his statements.
