Australia vows ‘strongest action possible’ if Australian POW was executed by Russia in Ukraine
Australia has pledged to take the "strongest action possible" if Russia is found to have deliberately harmed one of its citizens who was fighting alongside Ukrainian forces.
Oscar Jenkins was captured last month by Russian troops, with a video recently surfacing showing him being interrogated.
Australian media outlets ABC and Seven News, which is affiliated with CNN, reported that the 32-year-old has likely been killed, citing Ukrainian sources.
During a press conference, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that his government is "urgently seeking clarification" on the matter, calling the situation serious.
“We have called in the Russian ambassador already. We will await the facts to come out. But if there has been any harm caused to Oscar Jenkins, that is absolutely reprehensible. And the Australian government will take the strongest action possible,” he said.
The Prime Minister did not elaborate on what specific sanctions or measures might be taken.
