Iceland rocked by 130 earthquakes in one day as eruption fears grow
More than 130 earthquakes were recorded on Tuesday at the massive Bardarbunga volcano, raising concerns about a potential eruption, according to Iceland's Meteorological Office.
However, the volcano, located in the highlands of southern Iceland, poses no immediate threat to infrastructure as it lies in an uninhabited area.
The seismic activity lasted about three hours, with the strongest earthquake registering a magnitude of 5.1.
"Earthquakes continue to be detected in the region," the Meteorological Office reported.
Experts suggest the tremors are linked to "increasing pressure from magma buildup," but it remains difficult to predict the progression of this activity.
The volcano is part of one of six volcanic systems beneath Vatnajokull Glacier, the largest glacier in Europe.
