Slovakia: Opposition parties call for non-confidence vote against Robert Fico

Opposition parties in Slovakia are urging a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Robert Fico's government, citing growing ties between the leader and Vladimir Putin.

The leftist coalition led by Robert Fico has faced increasing internal strife in recent months, including a halving of its parliamentary deputies and disputes within the party itself.

While the date of the vote has not yet been announced, the opposition will need to secure a majority to compel the country’s president to appoint a new prime minister.

The current government is grappling with significant domestic challenges, including a high budget deficit, issues in the healthcare system, and the cessation of Russian gas deliveries via Ukraine. Ukraine announced late last year that it would not renew the transit agreement.

According to the leader, the end of Russian gas exports will cost Slovakia 1.5 billion euros.

Last month, Robert Fico’s visit to Moscow to meet Vladimir Putin sparked outrage among a portion of the Slovak population.
