Revolution in the Vatican: Pope chooses a woman as prefect
A woman is appointed Vatican prefect by Pope Francis for the first time.
He has just appointed Sister Simona Brambilla as the new Vatican prefect for consecrated life and societies of apostolic life, of which she had been the secretary since 2023.
Ms. Brambilla, 59, holds a professional nursing degree and was a missionary in Mozambique. Before joining the Vatican, she directed the Institute of the Consolata Missionary Sisters between 2011 and 2023.
The position of Vatican prefect was previously reserved for cardinals and archbishops only.
