Deze week ging een opvallende selfie vanuit het Virungapark viraal. Rangers Mathieu Shamavu en Patrick Sadiki poseerden er immers met twee rechtopstaande gorilla's. Dat leverde een buitengewoon kiekje op dat tienduizenden keren gedeeld en miljoenen keren geliket werd op social media.

Sommige mensen vermoedden dat het om photoshop ging, maar dat was niet het geval. Intussen hebben de twee rangers bevestigd dat de foto wel degelijk echt is. Dat heeft het Congolese nationale park zelf laten weten.

"Een gewone dag op kantoor", schreef ranger Mathieu Shamavu donderdag bij de foto die hij op Instagram plaatste.

Het Virungapark legt nu in een bericht uit dat het om twee vrouwelijke berggorilla’s gaat, Ndakasi en Matabishi. Beide primaten werden wees in de zomer van 2007. Stropers hadden hun moeders gedood. Ndakasi en Matabishi waren toen amper twee en vier maanden oud. Leden van de Elite Anti Poaching Units and Combat Trackers vingen de babygorilla’s op in Senkwekwe, een weeshuis voor berggorilla’s. Zo groeiden ze op in het Virungapark, dat ze nog nooit hebben verlaten.

De weesapen zien de verzorgers dan ook als hun ouders, bevestigt adjunct-directeur van het park, Innocent Mburanumwe, aan de BBC. De gorilla's hebben geleerd om hun verzorgers te imiteren. Toch was ook hij verrast door de foto die het opvallende moment kon vastleggen. "Het is daarom erg grappig. Merkwaardig hoe een gorilla de mens kan imiteren en rechtop staan".
